Whacked USB Or Removeable Drive 1.

First Start the Windows Explorer

Plug in or insert the problem drive. The Windows Explorer should recognize the drive and assign it a drive letter. Look on the left pane of the Explorer down towards the bottom of the list of folders. (there may also be a description next to the drive letter so it may look something like “LEXAR MEDIA (F:)”)

RIGHT CLICK on the drives icon, a menu should appear.

Click on Properties, a dialog box should appear.

At the top of the dialog box you will see what look like file folder tabs, click the Tools tab.

Under Error Checking click the Check Now button.

Click the checkbox in front of Automatically fix file system errors.

Click the checkbox in front of Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Click the Start button.

The utility will begin checking the drive for errors.

After the utility has finished running you may find Folders on the drive that look something like “FOUND.000“, within that folder you will find files that look something like “FILE0000.CHK” this is stuff the utility has recovered. The simplest way to see what’s in these files is to open them in notepad.

To open a recovered file in notepad: RIGHT CLICK on the “CHK” files icon, a menu will appear.

Click Open With.

A caution dialog may appear, if so click the Open With button.

At the next dialog box click Select the program from a list then click the OK Button.

Select Notepad from the list. Notepad will show any displayable information that is in the “CHK” file.

If there is nothing in the “CHK” files you want to keep delete them (RIGHT CLICK on the file or folder and select Delete).
